Chelsea new boy Jorginho called a ‘very special footballer’ by top pundit

Top star for Chelsea

Paul Merson thinks that Chelsea star Jorginho could well be the pick of the bunch when it comes to transfers this summer, and said that there have been some good signings this time round in the market, but that the former Napoli player is the best of the bunch.

He was asked who he felt was the signing of the summer, and said the Chelsea star was his top pick – saying that Pep Guardiola isn’t going to want a player for no reason – and that he just needs to get used to the pace of the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson added: “I’m going to go with Jorginho. I know he wasn’t great in the Community Shield but Pep Guardiola wanted to buy him and that tells you everything. The lad can play and £50m in this day and age is a cup of tea, if I’m honest.

“It might be obvious or it might be not, but when he gets used to it he’s a very special footballer. He’s tidy, he can pass the ball, he breaks things up.

“The problem is, just like Alberto Aquilani when he was at Liverpool – and given how highly rated he was at Roma – is getting used to the different pace of the game over here compared to Italy.”

Title hopes for Chelsea

Chelsea may be toiling in the Europa League this season, but that won’t stop their fans hoping for a run at the Premier League title.

They’re far from favourites, but after bringing in Kepa to replace Thibaut Courtois, and also keeping hold of both Willian and Eden Hazard, they do have a chance.

The Blues will want to get back into the top four first and foremost, and it will certainly be a tough challenge, with Arsenal rejuvenated this term, and the rest of the top sides all keen to secure Champions League football as well.
