Arsenal boss Unai Emery provides advice to Matteo Guendouzi over Fellaini hair-pulling incident

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has this afternoon provided a piece of light-hearted advice to Matteo Guendouzi, following the incident between the young midfielder and Manchester United counterpart Marouane Fellaini last night.

Manchester United 2-2 Arsenal

Arsenal travelled to Old Trafford for a Premier League clash with United last night, with the Gunners having headed into proceedings hopeful of extending their unbeaten streak across all competitions to a hugely-impressive 20 matches.

And, in the end, a thrilling affair in Manchester saw Unai Emery’s men do just that.

Arsenal took the lead in the matchup with 26 minutes on the clock, when a rare David De Gea mistake saw Shkodran Mustafi’s header drop inches over the line.

However, the away side’s lead lasted just 4 minutes, as the offside Ander Herrera squared for Anthony Martial to equalize.

The visitors took the lead once again with a little over 20 minutes to go, though, in rather bizarre circumstances. A challenge between Marcos Rojo and Alexandre Lacazette in the United box saw the ball eventually come off the latter, and trickle past the helpless David De Gea to put Arsenal back in front.

And on this occasion, incredibly, the Gunners’ lead lasted less than a minute. A lumped ball forward just 13 seconds after the game’s restart saw confusion in the Arsenal box allow Jesse Lingard to nip in and slot home from close range.

And this was how things ended at Old Trafford, with both sides forced to make do with a point.

Fellaini’s moment of madness

Aside from the goalmouth action on show in Manchester, though, there were plenty of other flashpoints which caught the eye over the 90 minutes last night.

One of these came 5 minutes from time, when Marouane Fellaini cynically pulled on the hair of Matteo Guendouzi to bring the Arsenal midfielder to ground.

The challenge, which somehow saw Fellaini avoid a caution, quickly went viral online:

‘Cut his hair’

Guendouzi provided his take on the incident during an interview with RMC earlier today, jokingly suggesting that jealousy may have been behind Fellaini’s cynicism:

‘There was a little hint of jealousy I think.’

‘He does not digest, perhaps, being short-haired, I think.’

And, in a rare moment of lightheartedness, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has this evening followed suit with his own response, with the Spanish tactician having suggested that Guendouzi may actually benefit from taking a leaf out of Fellaini’s book, by cutting his own trademark locks to avoid a repeat of last night’s events in future:

‘I think the best thing is for the next match for Matteo to cut his hair. And this problem is finished! Like Fellaini!’
